Welcome: Steve Hirase welcomed everyone to sunny St. George for the Consortium meeting.

Jerry Christensen highlighted the contents of the Consortium folder and facilitated the following updates:

Updates:

ULRC

Tracy Stewart introduced the March issue of the Utah Special Educator. She told about some of the new format changes of the publication.

Davalee Miller told Special Education directors to look for Mentor applications that will be mailed out in April. She urged them to carefully select people to attend the Mentor Academy for the coming year. A flyer was handed out as a reminder.

 

USOE

Bruce Schroeder facilitated the CSPD updates. He also announced the Troubled Youth Conference on May 11-12 at Snowbird. Registration form was handed out.

Valerie Scherbinske discussed preschool concerns.

Jocelyn Taylor gave autism information. There will be a roundtable with autism coordinators from districts. That conference will be Oct 19-20th.

Nan Gray reported on the success of the Transition Conference in March.

Dale Sheld discussed the Power of Art: Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities. This one day workshop is in Washington, D.C. open to teachers.

Brenda Broadbent announced the public hearing meetings for the rules and gave out copies of the draft rules.

Tim McConnell said that there will be regional inclusion conferences this coming year.

Mae Taylor introduced the new USOE staff members to the consortium.

Ken Reavis and Natalie Allen handed out Utah’s B.E.S.T. Project Model-Site and Institute Training Summary 1992-2000.

Parent Center

Helen Post discussed "Be the Difference" The Parent Center is looking for outstanding parents who would be interested in serving on local, regional and state level committees, advisory councils and boards. They are looking for people with a variety of backgrounds, interests and experiences. She also passed out A Parent Guide to Section 504..

Institutes of Higher Learning:

Utah State University

Ronda Menlove — An Administrative Endorsement Program was announced. There will be a new dean named in April. Rhonda passed out pamphlets about para’s in programs. She also thanked districts for their support of the "distance programs". She also gave a review of the IEP team member satisfaction survey and handed out the results.

Brigham Young University

Richard Young passed out the Interventions Conference pamphlet. The conference will be June 19-23rd in Logan. Early registration deadline is June 5. He said that the BYU Special Education Program has been revamped with a new cohort group. The Master program has also been revamped.

State Improvement Grant

Bruce Schroeder announced that Requests For Proposals (RFPs) will be coming out in April and need to reflect access to general curriculum and positive behavior supports. Bruce passed out an update on their activities.

CEC

Peggy Milligan said that their spring conference, held on Mar 17-18 in Salt Lake, went well. Ann Miller announced that Steve Kukic was awarded the Special Educator Administrator Award. Debbie Ballard was elected vice president and Catherine Treadway as secretary. The new CASE officers are: Tom Van Gorder, President; Colleen Riley, Vice-President; Harriett Dickerson, Secretary/treasurer. Margaret Lubke is the Past President. The International CEC Conference will be in Vancouver, April 5-9th. Salt Lake City will host the CEC Conference in 2006.

Announcements

Jerry thanked everyone who filled out the Zoomerang Survey.

Vickie Ahlstrom announced the Blazing Trails Conference on April 14 in Kanab.

Jocelyn Taylor showed the USOE recruitment video.

There was a flyer in the folder announcing the Paraeducator Conference, November 3-4 at the Provo Marriott Hotel in Provo.

"Guidelines and Accommodation of Students in Statewide Testing Programs" was handed out.

Presentations

Sorenson Vision, Inc. presented on Videoconferencing–creating a community of distance learners. Teaching and learning over the Internet is now possible using this new video conferencing system which installs into a Windows PC. The software is easy to use, you can share any PC document while in a conference, it’s low in cost at $685 per system and multiple sites can also be linked through a multi-conferencing device. Special Educators are using En Vision to receive courses, advise and mentor students, tutor individual students and conduct study group sessions. There is no hourly cost to use En Vision over the Internet.

S.I.P.C. Project–Peggy Baker, project coordinator, presented information. The purpose of S.I.P.C. is to provide assistance to preschool programs as they offer a full range of placement opportunities in the Least Restrictive Environment.
