Welcome: Ted Kelly welcomed everyone, especially all the new people.
He said that "Success is a journey, not a destination." He urged
everyone to support one another and said that if you are too busy to help
people, you're too busy. We all need to keep our perspective.
Bruce Schroeder:
Introduced the theme
for year: New opportunities, New challenges. He used the Square
Wheels overhead to get everyone thinking about what their new opportunities
and new challenges are for the coming year.
Jerry Christensen
and Karen
Marberger had everyone do an activity to get
acquainted. People were divided by region to share opportunities and challenges
within their region and to get acquainted with the new people. Each group
had a spokesperson to introduce the new people and give the results of their
discussion.
Bruce introduced Consortium board and called everyone's attention
to CSPD calendar and other announcements in the folder.
Updates:
ULRC:
Randy Schelble
introduced the year's theme for the Utah
Special Educator which is: New opportunities,
New challenges. There will be six issues this year and all will deal with
IDEA. She listed the topics for the year and asked for people from the various
districts to write for the issues.
Davalee Miller
gave the Mentor Academy
update. She said the focus is on mentor scales, which are knowledge base,
interpersonal relations, modeling, collaboration and coaching. She gave
a calendar of mentor trainings and told of the difference this year. which
is mentor site visits for two months.
Karen Marberger announced the 9th Annual Mentor Conference, scheduled
for January 15-16 at the Olympus Hotel in Salt Lake.
Jerry Christensen announced the Preschool Conference on March 26-27
with pre session on March 25.
PARENT CENTER:
Jennie Gibson announced their Parent Conference on March 27-28. She
called for presenters. She said they had a link to Utah Parent Center on
Granite School District web site. She said they were collaborating with
parent centers in Arizona to help minorities and work with Indian parents.
Parent Center staff are involved in IDEA task force. They have the opportunity
to tell parents the things as they come out in the Special Educator. Jennie
also mentioned that they are available to come to areas for training.
USOE :
Marilyn Likins announced the Paraeducators Conference on November
17-18. She gave information about details...rooming, etc. Registration is
due Oct. 3.
Davalee Miller (for Deb Andrews) announced the CCBD Conference/Best
Conference next week in Provo. The focus will be on academic areas; keynotes
were mentioned.
Mae Taylor-Sweeten said that there were a limited number of state
rules published for new teachers this year. Contact Mae for copy.
INSTITUTES OF HIGH EDUCATION:
University of Utah: Joan Sabastion said they had received two new grants
in the special education area; endorsement in speech & hearing and preschool
school. Two smaller technology grants looking at severe disabilities and
using the internet and cultural and school success grants were available.
Utah State University: Margaret Lubke gave home page address for
reauthorization. 435-797-4536 is her new phone number.
